The Book Club by Kriticos

Making Waves #3

Together with La Marée Haute, we have the pleasure to host The Book Club, an initiative created by multidisciplinary creative Kriticos Mwansa that promotes critical conversations. On this occasion, the discussion will revolve around masculinity and will be based on The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love by bell hooks.

The Book Club: The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love by bell hooks

Kriticos’ conversation series are a deep dive into themes of great significance – from love and faith, to masculinity, creativity and all in between – taking one classic book at a time as a point of departure. You can expect honest and passionate discussions that will confront the patriarchy, dissect the thinking behind it, and encourage new ways to change its systems.

DISCLAIMER! You don’t have to read the book to attend. Just come open-minded for new perspectives and thirsty for a good conversation.

The event will end with a live performance by Mélissa Girs!

Programme

18:00 Doors Open

19:00 The Book Club: Discussion of The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love by bell hooks, with moderator Kriticos and expert Armand Kumbakisaka. Followed by an open Q&A.

21:00 Live concert by Mélissa Girs at Cloud Bar

Speakers and Artists

Kriticos is a multidisciplinary creative: a recording & performing singer-songwriter, as well as a marketing & business professional. When his heart and mind set on a project, he goes all in. The Book Club is his latest one – a book club that doesn’t require you to read the book, a round table for philosophers and curious minds. Sessions are inclusive and popular across different ages, backgrounds and reading interests. So far, they have been hosted in Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin and Helsinki.

Armand Kumbakisaka has been an active psychologist since 2016, working in private offices between Brussels and Charleroi. He works with patients individually, and also helps couples and families, aiming to find out what their real needs and goals are. Through his work, he focuses on emotional management, behaviours, trust and fears.

Mélissa Girs is a young artist of Belgian-Congolese origin, who has been immersed in the world of music since childhood. The singer has long been focused on her modeling career internationally, working for brands such as Balmain, Armani and Adidas among others. After some scattered appearances, she decided to go back to her first love: music. She started her solo career as a singer at the beginning of 2023 with her singles “Blessures” and “Parfum de rose”.
