RSVPBaloji is a Congolese-Belgian artist celebrated for his work as a musician, poet, and filmmaker. Born in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, and based in Belgium, Baloji’s name means “man of science” in Swahili, though colonial history twisted its meaning to “sorcerer” or “man of occult sciences.” This duality has profoundly influenced his artistic journey, infusing his creations with magical realism and deep symbolism. A polymath, Baloji integrates music, fashion, and visual arts, earning recognition for his innovative storytelling and unique perspective.
Augure is Baloji’s debut feature film, an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. The movie interweaves the stories of four Congolese characters labeled as witches, exploring the societal weight of such accusations and their impact on personal destinies. Through its vivid storytelling, the film addresses themes of gender, power, and societal expectations, blending African traditions with magical realism. The striking use of color and costume design enhances the narrative, reflecting Baloji’s synesthesia and multicultural influences, including Central African heritage and Belgian surrealism.
Join us for a special screening of Augure on 15 January organized by La Marée Haute & BLCKLB at the Cloud Seven, followed by a Q&A session with insights into Baloji’s creative process and the captivating themes behind the film.
